เดิมแอฟริกาใต้เป็นที่อยู่ของชนเผ่าเร่ร่อน เริ่มเป็นที่รู้จักของชาวโลก หลังกองเรือโปรตุเกสและสเปนค้นหาเส้นทางใหม่ไปอินเดีย จนอ้อม แหลมกู๊ดโฮป (แหลมแห่งความหวัง) ใต้สุดของทวีปได้สำเร็จ และเมื่อมีการค้นพบเพชรและทองคำ ก็มีผู้มาตั้งถิ่นฐานกันมากมาย ปัจจุบันแอฟริกาใต้มีเสรีภาพ และไม่มีปัญหาแบ่งแยกสีผิวเหมือนอดีตอีกแล้ว ปกครองแบบสาธารณรัฐ มีประธานาธิบดีเป็นประมุข
