ปกบ้านครองเมือง เรื่องเล่าแต่เก่าก่อน ประเทศลาวในปัจจุบันมีรากฐานมาจากอาณาจักรล้านช้างในอดีต ซึ่งก่อตั้งขึ้นโดยพระเจ้าฟ้างุ่มในช่วงพุทธศตวรรษที่ 19 เมื่อครั้งที่อาณาจักรล้านช้างมีความเจริญสูงสุดสามารถแผ่อิทธิพลเข้าไปถึงบริเวณซึ่งเป็นประเทศกัมพูชา ไทย และลาวปัจจุบัน หลังจากอาณาล้านช้างเริ่มเสื่อมอำนาจ ได้แตกออกเป็น 3 ราชอาณาจักร คือ หลวงพระบาง เวียงจันทน์ และจำปาศักดิ์ (จำปาสัก) ปี พ.ศ. 2321 จึงตกเป็นเมืองขึ้นของอาณาจักรสยาม จนกระทั่งปี พ.ศ. 2436 ฝรั่งเศสใช้สนธิสัญญาไม่เป็นธรรมบีบบังคับให้สยามยกดินแดนฝั่งซ้ายของแม่น้ำโขงทั้งหมดให้แก่ตน ลาวจึงแตกเป็นรัฐในอารักขาของฝรั่งเศส โดยฝรั่งเศสรวมราชอาณาจักรทั้งสามเข้าเป็นหนึ่งเดียว ซึ่งคือลาวในปัจจุบัน
