ปกบ้านครองเมือง โฮจิมินห์ ผู้นำพรรคมิวนิสต์ ได้ประกาศเอกราชจากการเป็นเมืองขึ้นของฝรั่งเศสในวันที่ 2 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2488 แต่ฝรั่งเศสไม่ยอมรับเอกราชของเวียดนาม จนนำไปสู่สงคราม และในที่สุดฝรั่งเศสตกเป็นฝ่ายพ่ายแพ้ในปี พ.ศ. 2497 จึงมีการทำสนธิสัญญายอมรับเอกราชของเวียดนาม
